Leadership Camp: A Dose of College, a Pinch of Flour

While dodging dozens of hurtled water balloons and navigating clouds of flour, 187 Scholars got a taste of the college experience at this year’s Leadership Camp.

The annual Leadership Camp, which took place at the Springhill Camp in Seymour, Ind., is a Friday to Sunday event where our Scholars learn about becoming leaders, participate in team building exercises and discover a little bit about themselves.

While the camp is designed to educate our Scholars on leadership through different sessions, the mix of curriculum and fun activities gives them a glimpse into what they could expect in a college environment. And show them that it’s a place they belong.

The classes covered topics such as the meaning of authenticity in one’s life, how servant leaders share power by influencing and persuading rather than forcing others to do things, connecting in relationships, building a healthy community and developing one’s own personal leadership plan.

But, it wasn’t all about hitting the books.

Scholars were able to take a ride on the 800 feet long zip line, go canoeing and kayaking, tie-dye a tee-shirt, make friends around the campfire or pick a side in crud wars – a friendly event where you cover the other team with water balloons, flour and horse feed.

Special thanks goes to the 28 chaperones and camp apparel sponsor Union Savings Bank for giving these Scholars a weekend to remember.
