Back-to-School Bash Motivates our Scholars for New School Year
Get-together Included Program Information, Music, and Impromptu Parking Lot Tournaments
October 5, 2009 –Most kids today don’t find going back to school a reason to celebrate (only parents do). But then, the Scholars of Starfish aren’t most kids. On September 13, more than 75 Scholars (plus parents, plus mentors) filled the parking lot of Starfish Initiative for our Back to School Bash. Music and the sizzle of barbeque kicked off the event. Guests laughed (and yelled) in the Webster Commons as they competed fiercely in a Tonk card tournament. And back for a return engagement after ME Camp, a Foursquare (you might know it as “boxball”) tournament was held, too.
Starfish staff set up information tables to take advantage of the throng. Scholar Services Director Jimmy Graves and College Access Programs Director Carol Neary shared info about additional programs like Key Club and Dollars for Scholars.
After two hours of Pop, Hip-Hop, and Country music, parents and mentors took their place on the parking lot and concluded the event with the Electric Slide. This fun afternoon before school on Monday left our Starfish families looking forward to a year of great potential and achievement.
